Summer is nearly here! How is your bathing suit game going? No matter if you’re spending your vacation on a tropical island with countless little pure-sand beaches, or if a nice and cosy resort with pools and bars is your thing — a well-fitted bikini (or a one-piece) is basically a must! Unfortunately, finding the perfect one isn’t as easy as just browsing through online store categories at random. You’ll have to consider not only your aesthetic preference and style, but also the shape of your body. Here are some tips on how to choose a bathing suit that will do justice to a given body type. Enjoy!
Choosing a bathing suit — consider your body shape!
Everyone is different — it may be trivial, but it’s true. Our shapes differ in almost every way imaginable and it definitely should affect the manner in which we dress, especially when it comes to swimwear. There are several main body types that were establish based on some distinctive features — shoulders, bust, belly, hips, and (of course) bum. The goal is to find a bathing suit that will highlight the things you feel strong about, while at the same time hiding any imperfections. Let’s take a closer look at the most popular body types.
1. Hourglass
Widely renowned as the most desirable body type. Good proportions between shoulder/breast area and hips, with narrow waist. Let’s not kid ourselves — most of us have dreamt of looking that way at some point of our lives. That doesn’t mean, however, that being an hourglass you can put on whatever and still look flawless. Good — probably yes, but maybe not flawless.
All things considered, as an hour glass you definitely have a lot of options. Feel free to experiment with your bathing suit — Brazilian cut bottoms, naked back, low waist, side-knots and many more! Don’t be afraid to play a bit with colour and fabric too. Complex patterns, bright colourways and even some additional applications are your friends!
2. Round (O)
When it comes to round body types (apples), we deal with a whole different situation. Here, the size of the waist and belly area is accentuated the most — a larger middle part of the torso combined with slightly smaller hips and shoulders makes for a nice apple-like body shape.
For all the O’s out there we recommend a classic two-piece bikini with a high waist bottom, to slim down the silhouette. Apples also usually have a tad larger breast — be sure to choose a bathing suit top with wiring for extra support.
3. Triangle
Narrow shoulders, small breast, and wider hips — that’s a triangle for you. Also referred to as the “pear”, the triangle type is definitely one of the most feminine silhouettes there is. Your best bet it to optically highlight the upper parts of your body, in order to even things out a bit more.
As for the bathing suit, you could never go wrong with a bandeau bikini top, which will accentuate the bust. Also, grab some push-ups or, for larger breasts, an underwired balconette bra — your goal is to highlight the upper chest area.
4. Rectangle
A body shape with evenly divided dimensions. In this case your shoulders, waist and hips are pretty much of equal size, which with poorly fitted bikini may create a lack-of-curves kind of vibe. The key is to highlight your waist line, which in most cases will result in an athletic and strong posture.
What kinds of bathing suits are best for rectangular physique? Go with a monokini! Stylish cut-out sides will give you a nice optical curve in the waist area, which is, frankly, all you really need. Alternatively, choose bikinis with a lot of elements and applications that will accentuate both your breasts and hips.
